Etiquette for Dining During Corporate Travel

While heading out on for corporate travel can be an exciting proposition, it can also cause you undue stress if you're not used to eating in a variety of different situations. There is plenty of corporate business being be done around meal time. Not only will you be eating meals during business meetings, but plenty of business is often conducted during the casual atmosphere of breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

When on a corporate business trip, it's important to understand that when you're dining, whether it's breakfast, lunch, or dinner, it's actually a part of your business. This means that you may be using table wear, but your focus is on your business not on the food.

If you're away on a business trip it may be difficult to select a dining establishment. Don't be afraid to lean on your customers or clients at that time. After all, they know the area, and you may have to eat food you're not accustomed to, but at least you won't pick a bad restaurant.

If you're entertaining clients that are coming to you for a business trip, it's important that you understand that their dining experience needs to be enjoyable as well as conducive to business. Make sure you choose a restaurant that has a variety of different types of food available and if your clients are from out of the area or out of the country, find out their preferences before you book your dining establishment..

Remember, it's all according to who is getting the money as to who is going to be the host of the party. In other words, if you're wooing a business customer, you're going to be the host and may pay for the meal. But if you're traveling to somewhere else to look at possible business investments, there's a good chance they are going to be paying for the bill. It's important you understand the etiquette of business dining and who pays for what. If you're unsure, look to a colleague and asked them how it's done, find out from a mentor, and worst-case scenario, fess up and ask them. It's important that if you're in charge of the business meeting or it's your establishment that you understand how the paying etiquette happens.

The thing to remember when it comes to etiquette and dining with corporate clients, whether you're on corporate travel or not is your manners. Don't chew with your mouth full, don't lean with your elbows on the table, put your napkin in your lap and remember your please's and thank you's to all service personnel, door personnel and everyone else.

Dining during corporate travel doesn't have to be difficult, just remember it's a great chance to do business in a relaxed atmosphere.
